Yoga for beginners is a four-week live Zoom course that gently introduces beginners like you to yoga, in the privacy of your own home. It starts on Friday 13 November 2020 and is led by the lovely Laura Innes.
Yoga is a vibrant, living practice originating from India with ancient roots and a rich history. It has so much to offer us in the modern world and can help to bring more peace and freedom to our lives and communities.
In this friendly, welcoming class we will explore together the basics of yoga postures (Asana), breathing practice (Pranayama), meditation, relaxation and yoga philosophy.
Each week will have a different focus, based on what are known as the Eight Limbs of Yoga, and will support you to cultivate a connection to yoga that works for you.
Week 1 – What is Yoga?
Friday 13 November, 6.30pm
In our first class we will learn about what yoga means, and its roots and history. We will start to look at the Eight Limbs of Yoga and explore how yoga can help us feel more present and peaceful.
Week 2 – Asana & Pranayama
Friday 20 November, 6.30pm
In this class we will look at Asana (yoga postures) in a bit more detail and learn a basic Sun Salutation sequence. We will learn more about the importance of breathing in yoga and try a couple of simple breathing techniques.
Week 3 – Yamas & Niyama
Friday 27 November, 6.30pm
This class will explore the Yamas and Niyama, the living ethics of yoga that help us to lead a more harmonious and happy life. We will discuss how we can apply these ethics in our yoga practice on the mat and in our daily lives.
Week 4 – Mindfulness & Meditation
Friday 4 December, 6.30pm
In our final class we will explore the importance of mindfulness and meditation in yoga, try some simple meditation techniques, and look at how to start a simple meditation and yoga practice at home.
